Black Joy in Shared Spaces

Black History Month is a time for deep reflection, active listening, and critical thinking. And despite the frozen temps in New England, it’s a great time to get outside during our national celebration of Black voices, visions, and contributions.

Four N+T public art projects help us reengage with the Black artistry that runs deep in Boston and become tools for unlearning and relearning – Deeply Rooted in the NeighborHOOD (2021) by Johnetta Tinker and Susan Thompson, Augment (2019) by Nick Cave, They Did Not Know They Were Seeds (2023) by Tanya Nixon-Silberg, and Breathe Life 3 (2019) by Problak are up and ready to view this month. Each work informs the legacies and achievements of past generations, reckons with and confronts centuries of injustice — some of which are still very prevalent today — and ensures voices are not just heard this month, but present all year round.
